皆さんは、壁の木目や天井のシミが「人の顔」や「動物」に見えてしまい、一度そう見えたらもうそれ以外に見えなくなってしまった……という経験はありませんか？
実はこれ、「パレイドリア現象（Pareidolia）」と呼ばれる、立派な脳の錯覚なんです。
一言でいうと「脳が勝手に、ただの模様を『自分の知っている形』に勘違いしてしまう現象」のこと。特に、人間が日常で最もよく見る「人の顔」に対しては非常に敏感で、3つの点や線が集まっているだけで、脳が自動的に顔だと認識してしまいます。

💡 なぜ起こるの？
人間の脳には、生存本能として「目の前にあるものが敵（人や動物）かどうか」を瞬時に見分けるシステムが備わっています。そのため、ちょっとした模様でも「顔かもしれない！」と過剰に反応してしまうのが原因です。巷で噂される「心霊写真」の多くも、実はこの脳の錯覚によるものと言われています。
それでは、このパレイドリア現象の代表格！「天井のシミが何に見えるかトップテン」をご紹介します。
第1位：人の顔
圧倒的王座。3つの点（目と口）があるだけで、脳が勝手に「怒っているおじさん」や「悲しそうな子供」の顔に変換してしまいます。一度目が合ったら最後、視線を外せなくなります。

「あそこが耳で、ここが尻尾で……」と見立てやすい犬や猫、あるいはクマのような形。これが見える日は、少し穏やかな気持ちで眠れます。

絶妙に湾曲したシミが、北海道や能登半島、あるいは四国のように見えてくるパターン。自分の住んでいる地域に似ていると、妙な親近感が湧きます。
第4位：お化け・モンスター
夜中に目が覚めたとき限定で恐怖度が跳ね上がるタイプ。昼間は見てもなんともないのに、薄暗い中だとユラユラ動いているように錯覚します。
第5位：宇宙人（グレイ型）
目が異様に大きく、顎がシュッと細い、いわゆる定番の宇宙人の顔。天井からこちらを観察されているようなディストピア感を味わえます。
第6位：乗り物（飛行機・UFO）
少しシャープな形をしたシミ。空（天井）にあるだけに、飛行機や浮遊するUFOに見立てられやすいです。
第7位：世界地図・謎の大陸
シミが広範囲に広がっている場合に出現。オーストラリア大陸や、あるいは架空のファンタジーRPGに出てくる冒険マップに見えてきて、妄想が捗ります。
第8位：巨大な虫
一瞬心臓が跳ね上がるタイプ。「アシダカグモか！？」と思って飛び起きて照明をつけたら、ただの濃いシミだったときの安堵感と脱力感は異常です。
第9位：木や植物
根元から枝が広がっているように見えるシミ。ちょっとしたボタニカルアートのようで、天井のシミ界隈の中では比較的癒やし効果が高い部類です。
第10位：抽象画（現代アート）
何に見えるというわけではないけれど、見る日によって感情の写し鏡のように形が変わる謎の造形。「これはこれで味がある」と思えたら、天井鑑賞の上級者です。

In short, Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon where our brains mistakenly perceive a familiar shape or image in a completely random pattern. Our brains are especially sensitive to human faces, which we see every single day. Just three dots or lines coming together can trick the brain into automatically recognizing it as a face.

Why Does This Happen?
It all traces back to our primitive survival instincts. The human brain is hardwired to instantly detect whether something in front of us is a potential threat (like a predator or a stranger). Because of this evolutionary trait, our brains overreact to minor patterns, thinking, "Watch out, that might be a face!" In fact, it's safe to say that most "ghost photos" rumored out there are simply the result of this creative brain glitch.
